The Kingkiller Chronicles Might Be Coming to TV!

So it’s a short post today, because I’m trying to get a bunch of stuff done this morning so that I can go see Stringer Bell lead a team of kaiju-fighting giant robots.

But, despite that, I have some very interesting and exciting news: according to tor.com and io9.com, Fox has optioned Patrick Rothfuss’s Kingkiller Chronicles trilogy.

I’m a big fan of these books, but they are long and complex, so there are all sorts of risks bringing this to TV, the least of which is what can be shown on network TV versus basic cable (Fox vs. FX). And although io9 wants the show to end up on FX, I’d worry that FX’s creative freedom might be limited by small budgets, ultimately doing more harm than good.

And I remind you that it’s just an option, which is far from greenlighting the show. So any discussion of Fox vs. FX is premature. But, I think we can say that this is a consequence of the wild success of HBO’s Game of Thrones. And as a fantasy fan, I’m excited to hear that execs might be bringing more fantasy to TV, especially such wonderful stories like those of Rothfuss.
