Pacific Rim Trailer Released

Yeah, yeah, I know I said I wouldn’t post any more movie stuff, but c’mon, it’s Pacific Rim. This trailer was one of the most talked about moments of San Diego Comic Con. I have to post about it. So, here it is.

My first reaction was something along the lines of this: Oh! This is that giant robots vs. Godzilla movie. Oh, right, it’s directed by Guillermo del Toro. Is that Idris Elba? Is that GLaDOS? And my excitement skyrocketed because yes, that was Idris Elba, and yes, that is Ellen McLain providing a GLaDOS-like voice for the mech-suit’s AI.

Yes, there are great people behind this, and yes, it has the potential to be great. But then I watched it a second time, and my skepticism grew. The trailer had the Inception-like BRAAAAM sound effect, and it had some Transformer-like sights and sounds (i.e., too big, too loud, and too fast to really appreciate it). But I also realize there are often differences between the quality of a trailer and the quality of the movie. And this is only the first trailer, so I could be jumping the gun a bit.

While generally excited for this, I’m not completely sold yet. I’ll need to see more to to be convinced. I know this probably puts me in the minority of nerds. So convince me I’m wrong; tell me what you think.

  1. I don’t think you’re wrong, it needs more. It has a lot of potential, but what I see is essentially two giant creatures in a street fight. I don’t find that terribly appealing. It’s almost like two kids playing with action figures thought “wouldn’t it be cool if these were HUGE and took out BUILDINGS when they fought?!?!”
